The Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Bacteriology. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor level. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience. This position is subject to budgetary approval. UPEI is committed to teaching, research, and service. The AVC has 240 DVM students, over 90 graduate students, 67 full-time faculty members and a professional and technical team of 225. It has full accreditation by the AVMA/CVMA, is recognized by the RCVS in the UK, and delivers DVM, MVSc, MSc and PhD programs. Candidates with strong basic research interests in areas including, but not limited to, bacterial or mycotic diseases of animals or zoonotic agents are being sought. The Department of Pathology and Microbiology has research strength and interests in zoonotic diseases, and is looking to enhance its capacity in basic research and graduate training. The department has state-of-the-art flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and microarray facilities. The AVC’s animal housing facilities have recently expanded with the addition of an SPF mouse facility, and a new aquatic animal facility soon to be certified up to CFIA Aquatic Containment Level 2 (AQC2) for in-vivo work. The successful applicant will hold a PhD with a productive postdoctoral or research experience and a record of research publications in bacteriology. The individual will be expected to develop and maintain an active externally funded (for example NSERC and/or CIHR) basic research program in bacteriology, to teach at the graduate and professional (DVM) student levels, to supervise graduate students at the MSc and PhD levels and to potentially participate in clinical rotations for senior DVM students. The position has shared teaching responsibilities of a 5 credit-hour Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology course to second year DVM students, and to graduate bacteriology courses. A DVM (or equivalent) degree is desirable, and preference will be given to an applicant with a strong bacteriology/mycology training such as Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM). Familiarity with conventional bacteriology as well as bacterial genetics, molecular biology, and alternative disease intervention strategies would be considered desirable assets. The candidate must demonstrate teaching and research skills and possess well-developed skills of collaboration, relationship building and communication.
